SUMMER RESERVE POLICE OFFICER SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

It is with great pleasure that the Old Orchard Police Department announced the names of the
recipients of the Old Orchard Beach Campground Neighborhood Watch Group Summer
Reserve Police Officer Scholarship awards.

Chief Dana Kelley congratulated the two recipients, Reserve Officers Andrew Redden and Eric
Fluette, received the $350 individual scholarships.  The reviewers of the essays written by the
scholarship participants were very impressed with the knowledge and sensitivity of these two
young officers in many important aspects of community policing and felt their essays were
expression of the values and goals of the Community Policing program.  Lt. Timothy Deluca
heads the Community Policing Committee.

Mike Vallante, Chairman of the Scholarship Review Committee, indicated “we first became
aware of the needs of our Summer Reserve Officers who personally must pay the $350 tuition
per officer to attend the Maine State Police Academy.”  It was then decided to set up the
scholarship program which requires the Summer Reserve Officer who applies to write an
essay which is judged for originality, research and scholarship. Lois Brown of the Scholarship
Committee stated, “For the second year in a row we were happy to see unanimous agreement
among the scholarship readers regarding who would receive the awards.”  Members who
participated in the review were Mike Vallante, Lois Brown and Margaret Harvey who confirmed,
“It is always nice to have one’s opinions confirmed by other members of the Review
Committee.”

Special thanks were given to The Pier Leasing Company and BRASS (Bar Restaurant
Association) for their generous support of the scholarship.  Detective Anthony Foshay is the
Police Department representative working with the Old Campground Neighborhood Watch
Group.
